The people of Wigan may be tired of
the pie-eating stereotype, but the fact remains that their football club's pies
are by some distance the finest in the premiership. Pooles of Wigan, the company that makes the pies, was set
up in 1847 and was bought 15 years
ago by Dave Whelan, owner of Wigan Athletic and founder of JJB Sports. MD Norman Coan describes Pooles, based
in the nearby village of Pemberton, as
'a Wigan company through and through' and the three flavours available at the bustling half-time food bar are meat and potato, cheese and onion, and chunky steak. 'We only deal with quality recipes,' says Coan. 'No rubbish goes into our pies. Some say that pies are only made
of end bits and rubbish but ours have really, really top-class joints of meat and everything is fresh - fresh onions and gravy.' The pies are sold for £1.70 and the price is set by the boss, says Coan: 'Mr Whelan controls the price that they sell them at - he doesn't like his fans being ripped off. On a good match day, full house, we sell between 6,000 and 8,000, and they always sell out early.'
